USA: Joe Biden favors “reform” of the UN Security Council

The president of USA, Joe Bidenwill raise today (21/9) before its 77th General Assembly United Nations Organization the question of its reform Security CouncilAmerican tank after the Russia’s invasion of Ukrainehis top adviser on diplomatic matters said yesterday Tuesday.

The president of the USA “will speak seriously on the issue of Security Council reform in New York”according to Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, who spoke during a press conference on the eve of Mr. Biden’s speech before the General Assembly.

It has not yet been decided whether he will do so “public” the “during his talks with (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and others”he added, saying that it is anyway “very likely” Mr. Biden to take a public position on the issue.

The question of reforming the Security Council returns to the debate whenever a major international crisis breaks out, especially if any of its five permanent member states (the US, Russia, China, Britain, France) use their veto power to prevent decision-making by the United Nations’ top body.

The way Moscow has been using its own veto since the start of the Russian military’s invasion of Ukraine is prompting Washington to now openly advocate expanding the SA.

Joe Biden will do anyway “major new announcements on how the US will invest to fight food insecurity”the White House national security adviser announced.

More broadly, the US president will try to rally as many states as possible to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as emerging countries are increasingly distancing themselves from Russia.

“What he will emphasize with regard to Ukraine will be the fundamental principle at the heart of the United Nations charter that no country can conquer its neighbors by force.”Jake Sullivan reported.

“Every state, whether democratic or authoritarian, has ratified the principles of the United Nations Charter. This is a way of reaching out to all the countries gathered in this room, including the countries that have recently expressed more concern and distanced themselves from Russia.”he added.
