Vatican: Pope Francis’s tour in Africa postponed indefinitely

Pope Francis has postponed indefinitely his trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan in early July due to the gonorrhea he is suffering from, the Vatican has announced.

“Accepting the recommendations of his doctors and in order not to jeopardize his treatment, the Holy Father, with great regret, is forced to postpone the trip (…) for a later date” which has not yet been determined, said the director of the press office. of the Holy See, Matteo Bruni.

The announcement does not mention the pope’s trip to Canada, which is scheduled for July 24-30. The tour in Africa was scheduled for July 2-7 and the Vatican had even given details of its program. Francis planned to visit the cities of Kinshasa, Goma and Jumba, among others.

The pope is suffering from severe pains in his right knee and has been in a wheelchair since the beginning of May. According to a Vatican source, he is undergoing treatment that is already “bearing fruit”. “He is doing better, it hurts less, but not enough to be able to travel,” said the source, noting that there is currently no talk of surgery.
