The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, wished luck to economist Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza), elected president of Argentina this Sunday (19). The head of the economy avoided comments about Mercosur, and said he would “await developments”.
“Now, it’s time to wish you luck. President Lula demonstrated appreciation for democracy, celebrating the fact that our continent has to strengthen democracy. And wait for events. Now there’s not much to comment on. We have to wait,” he said this Monday morning (20) at the door of the Ministry of Finance.
In September, Haddad stated that Mercosur would be “at risk” if Milei took the elections. In October, in an interview with Reuters, the minister stated that he was “concerned” about the election in the neighboring country.
Milei, who is called the “Argentine Bolsonaro”, said in speeches during the campaign that he intended to limit trade with Brazil, and called President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) an “angry communist” and “socialist with a totalitarian vocation”. He also said Argentina “would follow its own path” in relation to Mercosur.
