When is Black Friday 2020 and everything that has changed with the blow of the covid

Black Friday is here. That 2020 is the year of pandemic and crisis has not prevented stores like Amazon, Carrefour, El Corte Inglés or Fnac from making great offers and discounts on their stock. Companies have advanced and expanded their period of dream offers to cope with the ‘special’ conditions that covid has brought.

WHAT IS BLACK FRIDAY?

Black Friday is a day when many shops, both small shops and large chains, apply important discounts and offers to their products.

Like so many other dates imported in recent decades, Black Friday originates in the United States. It’s like the traditional Spanish rebates but more concentrated, it’s about cleaning up stock and making room for Christmas shopping.

Black Friday has been celebrated in our country since 2011, when it changed the regulations governing promotions and rebate periods.

The origin of the name refers to the revulsive that the date implies for stores, they go from red to black numbers. In 2019 Black Friday accounted for an average expenditure of 262 euros per Spanish, according to a study carried out by Cetelem. The total amount of money paid by shops in Spain grew by 18% in the year spent compared to the previous one, according to criteo data.

Regarding what was consumed, 41.7% of Spaniards who bought on this date acquired fashion and accessories, 28.7% telephony and electronics.

WHEN’S BLACK FRIDAY?

Black Friday does not have a fixed date on the calendar. Influenced by its American origins, discounts are the day after Thanksgiving. Or what is the same, on the last Friday of November, this year will be November 27.

Initially the discounts applied only for one day, but in recent years Black Friday has spread throughout the weekend or even for an entire week.

In addition, the Monday after Black Friday, that is, on December 30, the Cyber Mondayis held, a day of discounts focused especially on technology.

WHAT WILL THE FIRST BLACK FRIDAY IN PANDEMIC LOOK LIKE?

Mobility and capacity restrictions will prevent the day from taking place as in previous editions. The stores and brands that will participate are opting for online sales and expanding offers over time.

That year the pandemic“will greatly dilute the prominence of Black Friday,as there are many companies that are already trying to gain prominence early, offering days of discounts to capture those scheduled purchases that you previously left for the end of November or December,” says Angela López, of nielsen consulting firm.

Two examples of this are Amazon, which has advanced discounts with its Prime Day (October 13 and 14) and El Corte Inglés, which from October 11-14 gave away 15% of all purchases.

This year, the day will not mark a peak of sale and the record numbers, achieved the previous year, due to the dispersion in the time of the offers and the economic crisis that the country suffers.

WHICH BRANDS AND SHOPS WILL JOIN BLACK FRIDAY?

Large chain stores, such as El Corte Inglés, Fnac, Zara (and the rest of the Inditex chain), Ikea, Carrefour or Media Markt (which pioneered Black Friday in Spain), will participate in the offers. They have also been adding year after year to Black Friday online distributors such as Amazon, AliExpres and Ebay. Technology firms will apply discounts on devices, both Friday and Monday, and include Apple, telecommunications service companies such as Orange or Movistar, or hardware distributor PcComponents.

Not only will large companies lower their stock. In previous years, much of the small trade added to the trend.

WHAT DISCOUNTS WILL THERE BE?

Last year the discounts were lower than in previous editions. If previous years saw discounts of up to 60% or 70%, in 2019 they were 20% or 30%.

This year Amazon has confirmed that it will offer discounts of up to 40%.
