Where do chefs eat? With Fabio Bastos, from Kunthy Gelato, in Rio de Janeiro

Born in Magé, in Baixada Fluminense, Fabio Bastos nurtures a passion for ice cream from an early age. At 19, she already worked at her parents’ school and took care of the canteen, when she started buying popsicles to sell on site.

After not finding the product on the market, he decided to make his own ice cream. He then started making popsicles with just a mixer and a blender in hand, until his father gave him a small machine.

Fabio even sold popsicles to street vendors and in 1993 opened a small shop in his hometown. He dropped out of college for computer science and devoted himself to his love of gelato.

In 1997 was born the Kunthy Gelato , a brand of artisanal gelato that started in his backyard. Today the business has a factory that serves the food service market and delivers customized premium ice cream to various customers, such as Brownie do Luiz, Talho Capixaba, Naga, TT Burger, Spicy Fish, Belmonte group, among others.

Away from his business, Fabio tries other flavors around Wonderful city mainly around Ipanema, and shares below his favorite places to eat well in Rio:

Babbo Osteria

Chef’s first restaurant Elia Schramm Babbo Osteria is located in a large property on Rua Barão da Torre and has recipes from Italy with a touch of authorship.

As a starter, I like the croqueta di salsiccia (R$32). For main course, I recommend the ragu di manzo (R$77) and for dessert the panna cotta sbagliatta (R$38).

Pura Brasa – Ipanema

Also at Barão da Torre, Pura Brasa serves cold draft beer alongside some of the dishes I like: boneless chicken (R$48), rice with broccoli (R$29), egg farofa (R$30) and Portuguese potato (R$30). BRL 28).

Pizzeria Camelo

A branch of the traditional São Paulo pizzeria, Camelo makes pizza the way I like it, since I’m not a fan of cheese.

My favorite order of the house is the Copacabana (R$ 101 for a large and R$ 71 for an individual), with turkey breast, leeks, diced tomatoes, black olives and lots of tomato sauce, because I love tomatoes.

Villa Rio Restaurante

Villa Rio is located in the garden of a 1904 mansion in Flamengo. The house has a bit of everything, like fish, meat, salads, pizzas, focaccias and calzones.

From the menu, I really like the dessert: my tip is the chocolate mousse pie with pistachio ice cream (R$ 29.90).

Talho Delicatessen – Ipanema

I like to drink the filtered coffee (R$4.50 for a small one and R$6.50 for a large one) and eat their chicken pie (R$9.10).

Sometimes, I end up choosing the peanut croissant or the chocolate almond pie (R$18.50). Oh, and ice cream, of course.
