Saudi Arabia said it had retaliated Monday night for launching a ballistic missile by Shiite rebel forces close to Iran, destroying a Sanaa rocket launch site during an airstrike.
“We have destroyed facilities in Sanaa linked to ballistic missiles and UAVs,” the official Saudi news agency SPA tweeted earlier, referring to the interception and destruction by a ballistic missile fired by them.
The Shiite rebel movement controls most of the northern part of the country, including the capital. He ousted Sanaa from the hands of internationally recognized government forces in 2014.
Tehran-based Houthis and forces loyal to the internationally recognized government, backed by a military alliance led by Riyadh, continue the war that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people and displaced millions more in the poorest Arab state. .
The SPA clarified that the targets of the retaliatory raid included a zone with “caves and secret ballistic missile depots in the Sanaa region”.
The Saudi Defense Ministry, according to the SPA, condemned the launch of the ballistic missile, calling it “illegal and irresponsible targeting of civilians” by “paramilitary terrorists”, using the term to refer to Shiite rebels.
The Defense Ministry said it would “take all necessary and deterrent measures to protect civilians and the territory” of Saudi Arabia, the SPA reported.
Since late November, Saudi Arabia has stepped up airstrikes in the Yemeni capital, where it says it is hitting “legitimate” military targets.
