OBE: Immediate and urgent need to reduce fuel tax

The Gasoline Dealers’ Federation of Greece returns once again to its request for the need to reduce fuel taxation, especially in view of the start of heating oil from October 15, in a letter to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

In its letter, the Federation emphasizes that “serious and decisive decisions must be taken by the government to relieve households and businesses that are now groaning under the burden of energy costs. There is an urgent need for a tax intervention in the fuel market as happened here and months in other countries such as Cyprus, Portugal, Ireland, this is how it should be done in Greece as well”.

“We understand that this move is not an easy decision due to fiscal dilemmas, but as you know, times for citizens and the business world are also very difficult. And they will, unfortunately, become more difficult. Especially in Greece, fuel taxes are so high which, together with the VAT of 24%, exceed approximately 60% of the final price and we are one of the countries with the highest taxes on gasoline in the EU.”, he adds and points out: “Consequently, an intervention – even if temporary – is necessary . Because the crescendo of rising fuel prices, as it is carried through the chain of products and services, causes other side effects: It makes accuracy “root” faster, but also consumer expectations deteriorate even more. And in the final analysis it contributes the most to impoverishment of society because we must not forget that the increase in taxes on heating oil made its purchase prohibitive, consequently the vertical drop in sales, along with side effects such as the reduction of taxes collected, the intensity of smuggling, the illegal logging of forests, the pollution of the environment from the burning of prohibited species and finally a series of well-known tragic social incidents caused by the inability of households to have heating with oil.

OBE, in order to prevent a new crisis in the consumption of heating oil, asks the government to act immediately, and before the start of its period, to drastically reduce taxes on heating oil, let us note here that if the disposal started today of heating oil, its price would fluctuate around 1.70.

We are convinced that a tax cut will pay off immediately
increase in consumption,” the letter concludes.
